Thank Goodness for Hard Times

I was talking with my 17 year old daughter the other day and she was telling me about a teacher she has in school.  He grew up in Brazil.  He father left them when he was a young child.  It was just his mom, his sister, and himself.  He retold of days where they had very little to eat.  One of those hard days they had a few eggs and rice to eat for dinner, the one meal they ate that day.  Each one of them got one egg and some rice.  This was hardly enough to quench the hunger.  The younger sister ate her egg and rice then cried because she was still so hungry.  The mom gave her daughter her egg and had only rice that night.  The son, my daughters teacher now, decided then and there that he would do whatever it took to make sure his mom never had to go hungry again.  He began training in soccer.  He played with other kids his age and ran all over the city they lived in.  He could outrun many kids and teens his age....

Lord, is it I?

I couldn't sleep last night, my head and heart hurt.  I have for the most part enjoyed the down time Covid-19 has brought.  I haven't really struggled with being home and having more family time.  What I have missed is connecting with other people.  I am a hugger, a handshaker, and an arm grabber.  Touch is my love language.  It is how I show people I care for them and feel cared for in return.   So social distancing is hard for me.  I also hate the way it makes us look at one another.  I don't feel like a fellow human being anymore.  Now, I feel like I'm a threat.  I am a threat to your health and safety.  This is what we are told over and over again.  "Wear a mask not for you, but to protect those around you. " I'm a threat and you see me that way.  We've disconnected ourselves from each other and it breaks my heart.   Social distancing was bad enough, but we must wear masks, masks that cover t...

Give Place No More for the Enemy of my Soul

While studying about priesthood power, two women from the scriptures came to mind. Their names are not given, but one is a widow woman living in Zarephath and the other is a woman who has suffered greatly because of an issue of blood. The widow woman lived during the prophet Elijah’s time. He had sealed the heavens and they were in the midst of a devastating famine. When the prophet found her, she had run out of food and was preparing her and her son's last meal, Elija begged her to feed him also. She explained she was preparing a last meal for her and her son and didn't have enough. Now earlier, Elijah was told by the Lord to go to this city or village because He had commanded a woman to care for Elijah. She almost refused him, but when he made her a promise, she believed him and was blessed. She was prepared by the Lord and given power to recognize the truth in the prophets words and move forward with Faith. Elijah promised her that her oil and flour would not fail until t...

Our day and a bit in France

Image
After we explored Dover castle and the white cliffs, we made our way back to Folkstone and the channel tunnel to cross into France.  We started this day behind.  I had hoped to explore the White Cliffs or the castle the day before, but with flight delays and how tired we were, we did not get out to do anything that evening.  We also spent a lot more time at the castle than I had planned because we toured the underground tunnels--so worth it.  We made it to the channel crossing at about 4 pm, which meant we would arrive at our hotel at 9 or 10 pm.  I was still suffering from jet lad, it was only the second day, so as soon as we drove the car onto the train taking us under the channel to France, I fell asleep and slept the hour or so that it took to cross the channel. Originally our plan was to drive east to Dunkirk and then head west to Normandy, but because we left so late, we decided to see Dunkirk on our way home the next day and head straight to our motel....
